Ashton Brinkworth is on the path to the Tokyo Olympics after winning gold in the short course 50m freestyle

Ashton Brinkworth never thought he’d be in the frame for the Tokyo Olympics. But after beating two former Olympics and with time on his side, the 20-year-old could prove one of Perth’s brightest Olympic hopes. Last weekend, the WAIS product won gold in the hotly contested 50m freestyle at the Australian Virtual Short Course meet. While Rio Olympians Cameron McEvoy and David Morgan weren’t in the same pool as Brinkworth, competing remotely from Queensland, he conquered both with a blistering finals time and personal best of 21.30 seconds. “I wasn’t expecting to go that fast at all,” Brinkworth said. “I had to wait about four hours for the guys in Brisbane to race their final so I didn’t know for a while I’d won. “While it’s different not having a full eight lanes of everyone going at it, men’s swimming in WA is strong so I still had to push and fight.” Should the 2020 Olympics gone ahead as scheduled in July, Brinkworth believes he would have had little chance of cracking the Australian squad. But with an extra 365 days on his side, the UWA West Coast club swimmer could do what he previously thought impossible for his age. “I’m still young so having an extra year isn’t the worst thing for me in terms of trying to get on the team so I’m trying to think about it in the most positive way,” he said. “Having an extra year for me to get older and stronger is an advantage but I won’t know until next year. “My dream has always been to get on the Australian senior swimming team.” Brinkworth’s rise has surprised many - including himself. The former Hale swimming captain only started swimming competitively in his mid-teens after witnessing his two close friends score a bronze and silver medal at a national swimming meet when he was 14. “Watching them made me hungry to reach that level so I started training harder,” he said. “I never thought it could be a career until I finished high school. “I was focused more on school at the time but I picked it up more once school finished and I was lucky enough to be invited to join the WAIS group which has motivated me a lot.” Brinkworth is now focused on continuing his run of form at the upcoming long course national meet before the Australian Swimming Championships in April followed by Olympic trials in June.
