VideoAFL: Gerard Whateley has branded the last 12 months as the worst in Collingwood's history following the departure of coach Nathan Buckley.

West Coast captain Luke Shuey has revealed he could return from injury a week earlier than first thought.

The Norm Smith medallist hopes to take the field for the Eagles’ WAFL side against ladder leaders Subiaco at Leederville Oval on June 19, during the AFL team’s bye round.

Shuey hasn’t played since sustaining a hamstring tendon injury late in West Coast’s victory over Port Adelaide at Optus Stadium in round three, his only appearance of the season.

He’s been back to full training for a week and a half and “doing the extras” to get back.

His return will likely be on managed minutes, similar to fellow midfield gun Elliot Yeo’s WAFL comeback game from a groin injury a few weeks back.

If he gets through, the 31-year-old should be go to go for West Coast’s blockbuster home clash against the Western Bulldogs on June 27.

“It’s all going well,” Shuey told Triple M.

“The boys will play Richmond this week and then we’ve got the bye next week so there might be a chance to sneak a WAFL game in before hopefully returning to the seniors.

“I think we’re looking at next week. I think I said all along it was going to be the week after but there’s discussions that it might be next week.

“The sports science boys haven’t wanted to look too much further ahead with my rehab program than a week at the moment so I’ll have that discussion with them this week I reckon.”

West Coast’s next assignment is against Richmond at Optus Stadium on Sunday evening with young gun Oscar Allen set to return from concussion and midfielder Liam Duggan (knee) a chance to play.
