Western Force duo Ben Donaldson and Samantha Wood win Nathan Sharpe and Rebecca Clough Medals respectively

Ben Donaldson’s superb debut season for the Western Force has ended with their highest individual honour, while homegrown youngster Samantha Woods claimed a number of gongs at the Force’s season awards night. Former Waratah and current Wallaby Donaldson was recognised for his outstanding Super Rugby Pacific campaign with the Nathan Sharpe Medal - an award bestowed upon him by 116-capped second rower himself, who attended the ceremony. WA women’s rugby royalty Rebecca Clough was also on hand to present the medal named after her to scrum-half Wood for the Force’s most outstanding Super Rugby Women’s player. Voted on by the players, Donaldson finished with 224 votes, finishing ahead of utility Bayley Kuenzle (200) and centre Hamish Stewart (168), with loose forwards and tackling machines Carlo Tizzano and Reed Prinsep rounding out the top five. Donaldson’s first season with the Force was a memorable one, with his ability to dictate attacks and challenge the line standing out, as he led the league for kicking metres (5,444) and finished third overall for points (111, including two tries), while pacing the Force for defenders beaten. Force head coach Simon Cron said Donaldson was epitome of a model professional athlete. “It was mentioned to us earlier this year that ‘sweating is easy’. It is what you do away from the field that makes a huge difference,” he said. “Dono is always working on his craft and constantly looking at ways to get better. “This year you would have seen how dangerous he is as a triple threat in attack but also a guy willing to put his head in the spokes in defence.” A week after turning 20, Wood received the Force women’s highest honour off the back of a breakout season, also winning the members’ MVP and Force Woman awards after making her Wallaroos debut in April. Force women’s head coach Dylan Parsons said Wood’s development this season was spectacular. “She had key moments with her kicking game; scoring points when we needed them and getting us down into scoring zones to execute our game model. “It’s impressive how good her decision making is at that level when she’s so young. It’s exciting that she’s had a full season under her belt now and we’re excited to see her development in the future. “Off the field, Sam lives our values. We’ve talked a lot about our Maali DNA this year and she showed that every week.” Local product Tizzano was voted as the members’ Super Rugby Pacific MVP and won the Force Man award after leading the league in tackles (240) and placing eighth overall for turnovers won (10). Scrum-half Henry Robertson won the men’s rising star award, while 24-year-old front-rower Hannah Palelei was named the women’s rising star.
