Travel Picture of the Week

This week’s Travel Picture of the Week comes from reader Russell Stephens, who captured this wonderful gathering of king penguins at Fortuna Bay in South Georgia.

Standing proudly on a pebble-strewn beach, with snow-capped mountains in the distance, the penguins make for rather photogenic subjects.

What makes the image particularly striking is the low perspective. By getting down to the penguins’ eye level, Russell has given the birds an almost larger-than-life presence, while offering us a glimpse of the world from their point of view.

The overall composition is equally impressive. The smooth, grey pebbles in the foreground create a sense of depth, drawing our eyes towards the penguins, whose distinctive yellow markings provide a welcome splash of colour against the landscape.

And then there’s the character of the birds themselves, each looking in a slightly different direction, their pointed beaks almost echoing the jagged mountain peaks in the background.

It’s a scene that I hope brings a smile to your face, and worthy of being this week’s Travel Picture of the Week.
