Singapore-born entrepreneur Esther Oh, founder of Agili8, has been named the winner of the inaugural TARA Award at a black-tie gala held at the WA Maritime Museum in Fremantle.

The TARA Award celebrates first-generation migrant business owners in Australia founded by Param Singh from Soul House Australia.

Ms Oh was selected from 33 applicants spanning 21 countries of origin and 14 industry sectors, following a rigorous review by an independent judging panel.

Accepting the award, Ms Oh delivered a powerful and emotional speech.

“This award isn’t just for me. It’s for every migrant applicant here today who succeeded against all odds because of their courage and determination, even when everyone else thought the idea was crazy.”

She took home a $10,000 prize, mentorship from Mr Singh and the TARA trophy.

Her company, Agili8, develops artificial intelligence and X-ray-based software that works with smart glasses to help frontline workers perform tasks more safely and efficiently through remote expert assistance and real time guidance.

The company was founded after Ms Oh’s son lost his vision during COVID-19.

A People’s Choice Award was voted live on the night from four finalists and went to Burundi-born Bellamore Ndayikeze for her work at BN Collective.

Guests were Welcomed to Country by Whadjuk Noongar woman Aaliyah Nestoridis, founder of Kaarla Koort Boodja and cultural storyteller.

Biotechnologist and politician Parwinder Kaur gave an inspirational keynote address that celebrated migrants’ contribution to Australia.
