Arson squad detectives are investigating a suspicious bushfire in Perth’s eastern suburbs, marking one of the first major metropolitan fire threats of the season.
The blaze, which triggered an urgent evacuation warning, broke out in Kalamunda about 1.20pm on Thursday.
Emergency services were quickly deployed to the scene as the out-of-control fire threatened lives and homes.
At the height of the emergency about 3.20pm, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services issued an emergency warning for residents bound by Bird Road, Panoramic Terrace, Ozone Terrace, Yorna and Alpine roads, directing locals to evacuate immediately in an easterly direction.
Nearly 20 firefighting crews helped fight the blaze.
By Thursday night, firefighters successfully brought the blaze under control and contained its spread.
At 10pm, DFES downgraded the alert level to bushfire advice for surrounding areas in Forrestfield, Kalamunda and Lesmurdie.
Authorities confirmed the threat to lives and property had passed and no injuries or structure damage were reported.
Despite the containment, authorities are treating the outbreak with high priority due to its suspicious origin.
As one of the first notable metropolitan fires ahead of the peak summer bushfire period, police are focusing on determining the exact cause of the ignition.
Police are appealing to the public for assistance.
Anyone who observed suspicious activity, individuals, or vehicles near the Kalamunda area around the time the fire began, or who possesses dashcam footage from surrounding roads, is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a report online.
