Success in and out of the pool has led to the Bunbury Swimming Club being named the Optus National Club of the Year for 2017 at the Swimming Australia Gala Awards in Adelaide.

The gala event was attended by Australia’s best swimmers, including Olympic Program Swimmer of the Year Emily Seebohm.

Club president David Hunt said the award recognised the volunteers and the work being done over the past two years.

“We have come a long way,” he said.

“Not just from increasing membership, but with also implementing new programs.

“It is recognition and confirms that we have been on the right track.

“I am blown away to be honest.”

Hunt said the club wanted to continue to improve despite winning the award.

“Our goal is to keep the kids in the sport as long as possible and we do that by making it fun,” he said.

Club coach Toni Moore said the award was a reward for the hard work all the swimmers and members had put in over the years.

“We are really thrilled with the honour, a huge reward for all our members,” she said.
