Brown University shooter: Suspect video released as students remain in lockdown, two dead, eight critical
At least two people have died, eight are fighting for life, and another is in a serious but stable condition after a mass shooting at a US university while students were completing exams.
A full lockdown is underway at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, with anyone on campus told to hide, silence their phones and prepare to “fight” if they need to.
The incident broke out shortly after 4pm local time near an engineering building on campus.
Students were told to “lock doors, silence phones and stay hidden until further notice”. That directive was still in place six hours after the shooting, with no information about lifting the order given yet.
An enormous multi-agency operation is underway with local police, the FBI, the Secret Service and local fire services.

Authorities confirmed around 6.30pm that at least two people were dead and eight others are critical in hospital. Another person is in hospital but is understood to be in a serious but stable condition. Authorities still fear the number of fatalities and injured could rise.
Authorities appear to have little to no information about the offender.
The only details they have been able to share are that the offender was male and was wearing dark clothing.
In the second press conference after the fatal shooting, authorities said they did not have a picture of the suspect, however, said they would release a video of a suspect.
Nearly seven hours after the incident, police shared a short 11-second video. Police are hoping someone may recognise the person by his gate.
Police say the weapon has not been recovered, but cases were found at the university.
The suspect has not been sighted since he left a building on foot.
Some students have since evacuated select buildings as authorities enter buildings, searching for the shooter, while others are still hiding under desks.
Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee said he had been in contact with the White House, saying all available resources would be made available as authorities hunt for a suspect or suspects.
Residents who live around the university have been told to lock their doors, with fears the suspect or suspects could have fled the area.
US President Donald Trump says he has been briefed on the shooting.
“I have been briefed on the shooting that took place at Brown University in Rhode Island. The FBI is on the scene,” he wrote on Truth Social.
“The suspect is in custody. God bless the victims and the families of the victims!”
Mr Trump posted again on social media minutes later, revealing he had been given incorrect information and that the suspect was not in custody.
Vice President JD Vance said what happened in Rhode Island was “terrible”.
Police scanner audio says the shooting is likely a “mass casualty incident”.
As first responders arrived, witnesses saw multiple people taken away on stretchers, as paramedics performed CPR on others.
“I started seeing a bunch of cars going towards the scene and I saw someone on the ground, unfortunately. It looked like they were getting CPR,” Providence resident Jib Daya told local news outlet WJAR.
“I saw about two people getting carried away on the stretcher.”
Brown University sent additional alerts to staff and students saying the gunman was still at large.
“Police do not have a suspect in custody and continue to search for suspect(s),” the statement says.
“Brown coordinating with multiple law enforcement agencies on site. Emergency medical on scene.”
Multiple shots have been heard, most recently near Governor Street, within the campus, however, it
