AFL: What deals will get done today?
It was a busy opening day of the trade period, with Zach Merrett’s shift from Essendon to Hawthorn headlining player action that included mooted moves for Jesse Hogan and Scott Pendlebury.
But there’s plenty up in the air as we get into the swing of the week on Day 2.
Stick with us throughout the day as we take you through all the news and developments!
Rejected
Adelaide key defender Nick Murray remains at the Crows after a trade offer from North Melbourne was knocked back.
Murray fell down the pecking order this season but with Adelaide already losing Jordan Butts in free agency, they want him to stay.
The Roos reportedly have offered him a healthy contract to come across.
DOCKERS TRADE
We have our first trade of the day!
Nathan O’Driscoll is off to Tiger Land for pick 61, a fourth rounder, according to Callum Twomey.
The deal got done very quickly with the winger surpless to requirements at the Dockers.
He is likely to get a lot more game time at Richmond which would have been a major factor in getting the deal done over other clubs.
‘Love to have him’
New North Melbourne coach Jaymie Graham has revealed he has already had a chat with Zane Duursma who wants to be traded.
He said he “would love” for the young midfielder to recommit and while he didn’t go into details about the conversation you would think he pitched him a role in the new set up.
Graham also said the game plan would not replicate what Fremantle do after he helped the club to a grand final.
What Graham said upon arrival at North
It’s been a huge day for Jaymie Graham, who in case you missed it was confirmed as North Melbourne’s new coach.
Here’s the full wrap of what he had to say at his introductory press conference this afternoon.
O’Driscoll interest
Wantaway Docker Nathan O’Driscoll is generating some interest with Richmond now reportedly leading the race.
7NEWS’ Mitch Cleary has dropped the news.
The Tigers have gone very young in their rebuild and adding 24-year-old O’Driscoll to the mix adds a player approaching their prime.
How much would Viney cost Eagles?
Here’s Mitchell Woodcock on what the likely price would be for West Coast should they bring in Jack Viney:
West Coast are set to be asked to cough up a late pick in this year’s draft in exchange for Jack Viney should he decide to leave Melbourne and continue his career at the Eagles.
Viney is weighing up a move to Perth or to remain at the Demons where he has two more years on his contract despite being told by coach Steven King he would struggle for midfield minutes next season.
The 32-year-old toured the Eagles’ facilities and had a medical last week before going on holiday with his family where he is expected to make a decision around his future.
Essendon had been another contender for the 238-game midfielder, but they withdrew from the race on Monday morning as they look to prioritise their young midfielders on their list under new coach Mark McVeigh.
Should Viney decide to continue his career at West Coast, the Eagles would have to trade for the son-of-a-gun before the trade deadline next Wednesday.
An industry source told The West Australian the Demons would not ask a hefty price for Viney, with a third or fourth round pick in this year’s draft expected to be enough to get a deal done.
The Eagles currently hold their own third-round pick (No.43) as well as one tied to Hawthorn (No.56) and a pair of picks in the fourth round including their own (No.62) and one tied to the Western Bulldogs (No.71).
Ben King development
There is no official movement on Ben King to Hawthorn yet but the peices are beginning to fall into place.
18-year-old Aidan Schubert has toured Gold Coast’s facilities this morning and the Suns appear to believe they can secure him as part of a King deal.
The Hawks don’t want to give up too many picks for King after they already gave three to Essendon for Zach Merrett.
Schubert could be the solution.
Miers wants to stay put at Cats
“I don’t want to leave Geelong”.
When asked if Miers had been told by Geelong to look for a new club, Pickering said: “He hasn’t. He’s had a discussion with the coach (Chris Scott) and head of footy (Andrew Mackie).
“They’ll look at it if it’s the right deal for them, but he’s said to me ‘I don’t want to leave Geelong’.”
Eagles-Cats pipeline
If the deal for Gryan Miers does get done, it’d be the latest move in a string of big-name players to shift between Geelong and West Coast this century.
1996 All-Australian Mitchell White moved from the Eagles to the Cats in 2000, 2012 best-and-fairest Scott Selwood did similar in 2015, and 2019 All-Australian Tim Kelly went the other way at the end of that season.
Freo forwards’ tribute
Josh Treacy, Jye Amiss and Pat Voss have wasted no time in paying tribute to their outgoing forwards coach Jaymie Graham after he snagged the top job at the Kangaroos.
“My favourite coach and bloke I’ve had the privilege to work with the last five years... forever grateful for the impact you’ve had on my career,” Treacy wrote on Instagram. “Can’t wait to see you coach like you’ve always wanted.”
Amiss described Graham as “one of the best blokes you’ll meet”.
“Thanks for everything you’ve done for me as a person and footballer... go well!” he wrote.
Voss simply used a loveheart and a crying/smiling emoji alongside the words “Got a good one North.”
