After scoring his first Test ton, Joe Root went on to torment the Aussies along with Jofra Archer in a swashbuckling last-wicket stand to give England the honours on day one.

Nathan Lyon did not mince his words after being left out as Australia hope to break this last wicket stand and make the most of batting in the dyalight.

Will Root continue to stymie the home side or can Australia fightback to regain control of this second Test.

6th Over: AUS 0-16

Weatherald drops and runs a single, meaning Head will face Aktinson for the first time.

Gets one on the Head and turns it into legside for one.

Weatherald is surprised by some bounce but does well to keep it down off the glove.

Gets another single to finish off the hip

5th Over: AUS 0-14

Archer jags one into Head who cops a body blow.

Too straight and Head whips two off the pads to get his innings going.

FOUR BYES! On the pads again but shorter as it flies off the pads as Head misses the flick.

BEAUTY. Archer pitches on a good length and it nibbles away to just miss Head’s outside edge.

4th Over: AUS 0-8

RUNS! First of the innings, as Weatherald gets some width and leans back on a cut through backward point for four.

STREAKY FOUR! Atkinson goes short and Weatherald pulls and it flies off the top edge over the keeper running back and nearly goes for six.

Not much control in that shot

3rd Over: AUS 0-0

Archer is warmed up, it seems, and bowling in the 140’s now.

Head leaves and fends away as England make it three maidens on the bounce.

2nd Over: AUS 0-0

Atkinson from the other end to Weatherald.

He’s on the money first up, drawing an LBW shout, but it’s maybe pitching outside and always going over.

Tight leave from Weatherald as the angle takes it across before shaping back in.

Goes to cut, but wisely opts to withdraw the stroke. Another maiden

Australia underway

Jofra Archer with the new pink ball with Head on strike.

First ball is well down leg and left alone as was the second.

Goes way too wide outside off and then another down leg.

Finally gets one on the stumps after coming around the wicket as Head defends.

Head whips the last off his pads but can only find the fielder.

Archer operating in the mid 130’s throughout.

Maiden

End of innings

Australia will be happy to wrap that up quickly, though, from having England 9-264 they will be disappointed it got away from them.

Still, take nothing away from Root, who finally ended his Australian curse with a supreme knock that could set him up from the series.

Now we’ll see how England fair with the ball as Travis Head hopes to pick up where he left off in Perth.

ENGLAND ALL OUT 334

Doggett continues his short ball palan that has brought no rewards this Test.

Root gets another single.

WHAT A CATCH. MARNUS LABUSCHAGNE TAKES A SCREAMER!

Short ball Archer pulls in the air and Marnus dives across to take it one-handed and finally end England’s innings.

A great catch, and Root is left unbeaten on 138

What an innings and a fine knock from Archer as well to make his highest Test score of 38.

76th Over: ENG 9-333

Starc bowls to Archer who defends the first.

FOUR! Floated up and Archer crashes it through cover-point with a glorious stroke.

Almost gone next ball as he tries to repeat the shot, but it bounces past the edge.

Defends and leaves the rest

Day two underway

Joe Root on strike, Brendand Doggett with the ball.

Starts short as Root pulls to midwicket.

First runs of the morning as he pulls a single to fine leg.

Archer gets his first runs with a pull off the hip.

Root gets another single fine as Archer no look pulls to keep the strike.
