SWFLW 2023: Historic moment for women’s competition as Bronwyn Walker first to play 100 games

In 2020, Bunbury trio Bronwyn Walker, Lilly Taylor and Emily Lindsay stood together outside the Bulldogs’ change rooms at Payne Park, prior to their 50th games. Three years later, Walker is poised to celebrate her 100th game in Sunday’s second semifinal against Busselton, ensuring she will become the first senior female footballer in the South West to achieve the milestone. A foundation Bulldogs player, the dependable stalwart has seen plenty of changes since the establishment of the competition — except for Bunbury’s high standards. “I think it shows even though every year we’ve had quite a big player turnover, we are always getting new people. Along with this, we’re always expected to do well and make finals,” Walker said. “I feel this comes down to the high standards which are directed from our coaches and club — when it comes to both training and playing.” Walker has enjoyed working with all coaches during her career at the kennel, however says the working relationship with present coach Stephen Bilcich is special for the players. “He has his own girls obviously, so I think he brings a bit of that dad energy,” she said. He is caring, but can also be a bit tough when you need him to be.” When not playing football in winter or slogging sixes in summer for Hay Park Cricket Club, chances are you will find Walker relaxing with her family. They will be at VC Mitchell Park on Sunday cheering her on — and while deeply humbled by her achievement, the Bulldogs stalwart only wants one thing. “Getting into grand finals and winning premierships — these are things which don’t come around for everyone,” Walker said. “On Sunday if we can beat Busso and go straight into the grand final, that’d be my big ticket item.”
