A truck driver is in hospital tonight after suffering a medical episode while behind the wheel of a large sewage tanker.

The waste resource recovery vehicle left a trail of destruction through Bibra Lake, narrowly missing a petrol station and crossing six lanes of traffic on Spearwood Avenue before crashing through a barbed wire fence and rolling down an embankment.

Remarkably, no one else was injured but it is believed there is extensive damage to at least one business with a tree and retaining wall knocked over during the incident.

Traffic police attended and the man was taken to hospital by St John Ambulance.
